On today’s PJTV bloggers whip, I appeared with Bob Owens of Confederate Yankee and a young lady named Heather Gold, whom I’d never heard of before, but who is apparently a “comedienne” in the Margaret Cho mold. (To be honest, she didn’t seem to humorous to me, as all she did was tell the rest of us that the assigned topics of the day were utter wastes of her time, which makes one wonder why she was there in the first place…).
Topics, and quick thoughts on them, below the fold.
(1) Supreme Court refuses to hear Obama citizenship case: Quite frankly, I’m glad the SCOTUS has finally put an end to the Obama birth certificate insanity. There are enough issues with a guy who will say or do anything to get ahead that we don’t need to distract ourselves with this issue — not to mention the fact that the more high-profile the lunatic fringe is about non-issues like this, the more they help the media and others to marginalize the legitimate opposition to President Obama’s liberal policies.
Besides, even if the SCOTUS had taken the case, and had ruled Obama ineligible, does anybody really think the will of 52% of America would have been overturned and their votes negated due to what the spin doctors would call an “outdated technicality”? The fact is, there’d be a rush job to amend the Constitution (which Congressional Republicans would go along with in order to avoid charges or xenophobia and racism), and Obama would be president on January 20, 2009 anyway.
(2) On Meet the Press, Barack Obama Admits to Still Smoking: Tom Brokaw asked Obama on Sunday if he was going to keep the White House a no smoking zone considering his admission that he has “slipped” a few times in his attempts to quit smoking (an effort with which Obama credits himself as having done an “excellent job”).
Here’s my thought: perhaps President Obama should be required to smoke in the White House - along with his employees - in order to fund his proposed multi-billion dollar expansion of government-funded health care (S-CHIP), which is set to be paid for through further tax increases on smokers.
(3) Obama being attacked from the Left for not appointing a “Progressive” cabinet: This is one of those pass-the-popcorn, my-goodness-this-is-entertaining developments you simply can’t pass up, and it is simply hilarious to watch it play out.
I’ve said since the beginning of the primary that candidate Obama was the perfect Rorshach — people listened to him say absolutely nothing and espouse no consistent beliefs, and responded by putting their own beliefs and thoughts into his mouth and believing it to be true. The fact is, Barack Obama believes in Barack Obama. Now that he’s President, he’s going to do just what he did during the campaign, and during his Senate term, and during his state Senate term, and during the time before that: exactly what he thinks is best for himself.
The fact is, Obama’s cabinet appointments to date haven’t been center-right, as the Left is claiming; rather, they’ve been of the pragmatic center-left variety, bringing in experienced Clintonites (who worked in the more successful of the last two Democrat administrations) rather than experienced Carterites. The latter’s experience is made up of little but failure — something which raises their stature to the Left, but which makes them ineligible for a place in a narcissistically pragmatic administration like Obama’s.
